CHAPTER 12 WEEK of JULY 15 to JULY 20

We begin our post this week by sharing this important doctrine:

“The creator actively remembers His creation. Closely linked to His remembrance of us is the loving attention associated with it. He not only remembers you; He cares deeply about where you are, what you are doing, who you are becoming, and what you are feeling. He is interested and involved in your life. As Isaiah reminds us, in a comparison as moving and dramatic as that of the mother who may forget her child while the Lord can never forget His own, the Lord says:

“For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the Lord that hath mercy on thee. [Isaiah 54:10]

“Extending this mercy and doing all He can to assure our safe return to the Father who knows us and whom we will know when we see Him again is His most important work. I testify to you that you are His most important work. That He knows you by name individually and that He will never forget you.”

—Cecilia M. Peak, "Yea, They May Forget, Yet Will I Not Forget Thee”, BYU Devotional, November 09, 2010

Tuesday—July 15 thru Friday July 18—these have been days spent doing our temple shifts and attending the Susan Easton Black Durrant Lectures, as well as getting a special treat.

Sister Durrant taught about Joseph Smith being a candidate for the President of the United States and the last 20 days before his martyrdom.  These were interesting lectures.  Sister Durrant always bears her testimony at the end of each lecture.  After her Thursday lecture she said something in her testimony that is so true.  She said that “you can leave Nauvoo, but Nauvoo will not leave you.”  Once again testifying of this sacred place.

We had a little serendipity event happen this week also which in some sense coincided with the 2 lectures from Sister Durrant.  We had a message from our Friday Shift Coordinators that we would not be needed at the temple on Friday which was not totally unusual because we knew that others had been getting these messages over the last few months.  This particular Friday we were blessed with having this time off because it would allow us to do things that we would not normally be able to do because of our PM shift.

In the morning we decided to go to Burlington, Iowa and have lunch at a place that other missionaries had recommended as well as have an ice cream afterward at the place we have already mentioned called Grandpa’s where their ice cream is homemade--SO YUMMY!  We arrived at Big Muddy’s located right on the Mississippi river and got there just a little while before they opened which allowed us time to walk around and see the damage where the flooding had happened a few weeks previous that we have already mentioned.  It was quite noticeable and the fire department was helping pump water out of a train depot that had been severely flooded.  The city of Burlington has a nice walking path along the river front but that had just been opened up a few days prior because of the flooding.  So we have the seen the ravages of flooding.

Interesting that we had that flooding in Burlington and then we heard of the Rexburg, Idaho flash flooding which caused major damage there.  We have friends who are serving as a Mission President in Mexico and have their daughter’s family living in their home.  On their FB page they let everyone know that their home had been flooded with major damage.  They still have one year left on their mission.  They mentioned how much help they received from their angel ward members who help clean out the mess and helped their daughter’s family.  Lesson learned—“it is just stuff” they said with a cheerful attitude!
When we got home from Burlington we went to the Nauvoo Groves (more on this later) where the actor portraying Joseph Smith in the Pageant gave a portion of the King Follett sermon.  He did an excellent job and the spirit was in abundance.

This discourse was summarized in two Ensign articles in April and May of 1971.  The King Follett Sermon, one of the classics of Church literature, was given by the Prophet Joseph Smith at the April 7, 1844, conference of the Church in Nauvoo, Illinois. Some twenty thousand Saints were assembled. The account of the talk noted that it was the funeral sermon for Elder King Follett, a close friend of the Prophet’s, who had been killed in an accident on March 9.  It should also be noted that this discourse was given two months before the death of Joseph Smith. During these months the enemies of the Church were extremely active, and the Prophet undoubtedly anticipated the coming events.

We add here some of the doctrine of the sermon (links to the articles are given at the end) and encourage these teachings of the Prophet Joseph to be studied and learned from in your personal study and testify that Joseph Smith is a Prophet of God who had a question and sought the answer by kneeling in prayer in a grove of trees and was chosen by God to restore His gospel once again in these latter days and that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the church that has the true authority from God:

“Beloved Saints: I will call [for] the attention of this congregation while I address you on the subject of the dead.

The Character of God

“In the first place, I wish to go back to the beginning—to the morn of creation.  It is necessary for us to have an understanding of God himself in the beginning. If we start right, it is easy to go right all the time; but if we start wrong we may go wrong, and it will be a hard matter to get right.
“I want to ask this congregation, every man, woman and child, to answer the question in their own hearts, what kind of a being God is? Ask yourselves; turn your thoughts into your hearts, and say if any of you have seen, heard, or communed with Him? This is a question that may occupy your attention for a long time. I again repeat the question—What kind of being is God? Does any man or woman know? Have any of you seen Him, heard Him, or communed with Him? Here is the question that will, peradventure, from this time henceforth occupy your attention. The scriptures inform us that “this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” (John 17:3.)
“If any man does not know God, and inquires what kind of a being He is—if he will search diligently his own heart—if the declaration of Jesus and the apostles be true, he will realize that he has not eternal life; for there can be eternal life on no other principle.
God an Exalted Man
“I will go back to the beginning before the world was, to show what kind of a being God is. What sort of a being was God in the beginning? Open your ears and hear, all ye ends of the earth, for I am going to prove it to you by the Bible, and to tell you the designs of God in relation to the human race, and why He interferes with the affairs of man.
God himself was once as we are now, and is an exalted man, and sits enthroned in yonder heavens! That is the great secret. If the veil were rent today, and the great God who holds this world in its orbit, and who upholds all worlds and all things by His power, was to make himself visible—I say, if you were to see him today, you would see him like a man in form—like yourselves in all the person, image, and very form as a man; for Adam was created in the very fashion, image and likeness of God, and received instruction from, and walked, talked and conversed with Him, as one man talks and communes with another.
In order to understand the subject of the dead, for consolation of those who mourn for the loss of their friends, it is necessary we should understand the character and being of God and how He came to be so.
It is the first principle of the gospel to know for a certainty the character of God, and to know that we may converse with Him as one man converses with another, and that He was once a man like us; yea, that God himself, the Father of us all, dwelt on an earth, the same as Jesus Christ Himself did; and I will show it from the Bible.
Eternal Life to Know God and Jesus Christ
“The scriptures inform us that Jesus said, as the Father hath power in himself, even so hath the Son power—to do what? Why, what the Father did. The answer is obvious—in a manner to lay down his body and take it up again. Jesus, what are you going to do? To lay down my life as my Father did, and take it up again.
“Here, then, is eternal life—to know the only wise and true God; and you have got to learn how to be gods yourselves, and to be kings and priests to God, the same as all gods have done before you, namely, by going from one small degree to another, and from a small capacity to a great one; from grace to grace, from exaltation to exaltation, until you attain to the resurrection of the dead.
The Righteous to Dwell in Everlasting Burnings
“These are the first principles of consolation. How consoling to the mourners when they are called to part with a husband, wife, father, mother, child, or dear relative, to know that, although the earthly tabernacle is laid down and dissolved, they shall rise again to dwell in everlasting burnings in immortal glory, not to sorrow, suffer, or die any more, but they shall be heirs of God and joint heirs with Jesus Christ. What is it? To inherit the same power, the same glory and the same exaltation, until you arrive at the station of a god, and ascend the throne of eternal power, the same as those who have gone before.
“When we understand the character of God, and know how to come to Him, he begins to unfold the heavens to us, and to tell us all about it. When we are ready to come to him, he is ready to come to us.
Our Greatest Responsibility
“The greatest responsibility in this world that God has laid upon us is to seek after our dead. The apostle says, “They without us cannot be made perfect”; for it is necessary that the sealing power should be in our hands to seal our children and our dead for the fulness of the dispensation of times—a dispensation to meet the promises made by Jesus Christ before the foundation of the world for the salvation of man.
The Forgiveness of Sins
“All sins shall be forgiven, except the sin against the Holy Ghost; for Jesus will save all except the sons of perdition.
“Knowledge saves a man; and in the world of spirits no man can be exalted but by knowledge. So long as a man will not give heed to the commandments, he must abide without salvation. If a man has knowledge, he can be saved; although, if he has been guilty of great sins, he will be punished for them. But when he consents to obey the gospel, whether here or in the world of spirits, he is saved.
“Hence the salvation of Jesus Christ was wrought out for all men, in order to triumph over the devil... All will suffer until they obey Christ himself.
“I am authorized to say, by the authority of the Holy Ghost, that you have no occasion to fear; for he [Brother Follett] is gone to the home of the just. Don’t mourn, don’t weep. I know it by the testimony of the Holy Ghost that is within me; and you may wait for your friends to come forth to meet you in the morn of the celestial world.
“Rejoice, O Israel! Your friends who have been murdered for the truth’s sake in the persecutions shall triumph gloriously in the celestial world, while their murderers shall welter for ages in torment, even until they shall have paid the uttermost farthing. I say this for the benefit of strangers.
“I have a father, brothers, children, and friends who have gone to a world of spirits. They are only absent for a moment. They are in the spirit, and we shall soon meet again. The time will soon arrive when the trumpet shall sound. When we depart, we shall hail our mothers, fathers, friends, and all whom we love, who have fallen asleep in Jesus. There will be no fear of mobs, persecutions, or malicious lawsuits and arrests; but it will be an eternity of felicity.
“A question may be asked—“Will mothers have their children in eternity?” Yes! Yes! Mothers, you shall have your children; for they shall have eternal life, for their debt is paid. There is no damnation awaiting them for they are in the spirit. But as the child dies, so shall it rise from the dead, and be forever living in the learning of God. It will never grow [in the grave]; it will still be the child, in the same precise form [when it rises] as it appeared before it died out of its mother’s arms, but possessing all the intelligence of a God. …
“I have intended my remarks for all, both rich and poor, bond and free, great and small. I have no enmity against any man. I love you all; but I hate some of your deeds. I am your best friend.”
“No man knows my history. I cannot tell it: I shall never undertake it. I don’t blame anyone for not believing my history. If I had not experienced what I have, I would not have believed it myself. I never did harm any man since I was born in the world. My voice is always for peace.
“I cannot lie down until all my work is finished. I never think any evil, nor do anything to the harm of my fellow-man. When I am called by the trump of the archangel and weighed in the balance, you will all know me then. I add no more. God bless you all. Amen.
NAUVOO GROVES
Between 1839 and 1846, the Latter-day Saints held many of their meetings outdoors. The Nauvoo Groves commemorate those early meetings, many of which occurred only a short distance from this spot.
There are many markers telling the story of the Groves from journal accounts.  A walk through the Grove will introduce visitors to journal and newspaper accounts of the many occasions when both LDS-Church members and friends were touched in their hearts by the spoken word.
During most of the historic era, when Latter-day Saints were building Nauvoo, the main grove was located immediately west of the temple. For one period, during 1844, Joseph Smith and others preached in a grove east of the temple, with a wooden stand set up near the corner of Robinson and Knight streets, east of the Nauvoo Elementary School.

On this same day there was a visit from Abraham Lincoln to Nauvoo.  A friend of the missionaries sent these pictures out.  Although Joseph Smith and Abraham Lincoln never met, these two valiant met lived in the same state and believed in freedom.  Deseret Book has recently published The Lincoln Hypothesis exploring Abraham Lincoln being the sixteenth US president during a very dark time in America's history. Author Timothy Ballard explores the crucial role that President Lincoln played to bring this nation closer to heaven. Readers will see Lincoln as a man inspired of God who invoked a covenant relationship between America and its maker — not unlike the national covenants invoked by righteous leaders in the Book of Mormon. In addition, The Lincoln Hypothesis reveals documented evidence that Abraham Lincoln did, in fact, check out the Book of Mormon from the Library of Congress.

Saturday--July 19 thru Sunday July 20

We found the following this week on a walk we took and so in honor of Granny Middleton who loved Coleus Plants we share them with her posterity—these are planted near the Information Center upon entering Nauvoo with quite a few different varieties of Coleus Plants and other flowers:

In honor of this weeks Pioneer Day coming up on July 24 we give a link to a PDF document with the quotes to the Trail of Hope markers on Parley Street.

In Sacrament Meeting on Sunday, most likely the world over, Pioneer hymns were sung in praise and honor to the blessed men and women who sacrificed so much and whose memory we celebrate this Thursday, July 24.  As we sang with the saints in the Rock Island Ward we were touched by the words to the following sacred hymn.  Yes, let us be grateful and honor these courageous men and women and learn from them, BUT let us not forget that we each in our own way are pioneers as we are also builders of the nation as we strive to live the gospel each day doing as is stated in these verses.  Oh, Remember, Remember -- Lest We Forget! (especially consider verse 2)
They, the Builders of the Nation, no. 36
1. They, the builders of the nation,
Blazing trails along the way;
Stepping-stones for generations
Were their deeds of ev'ry day.
Building new and firm foundations,
Pushing on the wild frontier,
Forging onward, ever onward,
Blessed, honored Pioneer!
2. Service ever was their watchcry;
Love became their guiding star;
Courage, their unfailing beacon,
Radiating near and far.
Ev'ry day some burden lifted,
Ev'ry day some heart to cheer,
Ev'ry day some hope the brighter,
Blessed, honored Pioneer!
3. As an ensign to the nation,
They unfurled the flag of truth,
Pillar, guide, and inspiration
To the hosts of waiting youth.
Honor, praise, and veneration
To the founders we revere!
List our song of adoration,
Blessed, honored Pioneer!

And last but not least, we would like to congratulate Ben, Erin and Patty Vehikite for being sealed for time and all eternity on Saturday, July 20, 2014.  From our work in the temple we know angels were attending that blessed event!

CHAPTER 11 WEEK of JULY 9 to JULY 14

Wednesday—July 9—today our day began at the Arrival Center at about 7:15 AM.  As we have mentioned before, what a wonderful facility for patrons coming that may need to change clothes, shower, have a cool place to wait for family members attending the temple and so forth.  Today we had another “perk” of serving on a mission.  This particular day started off with a steady flow of baptistery groups and others.  Around noon it kind of tapered off and 2 couples came in wanting to change clothes.  As I looked at one of the sisters, I said to myself, that sure looks like Ardeth Kapp, but didn’t say anything until they came up to the desk and then I said she looked familiar to me and did we perhaps know each other.  She immediately said I am Ardeth Kapp.  Now, for those of you who may not know, Ardeth Kapp was a former Young Women’s General President.  She served from 1984-1992.  She also happens to be friends with Sharon and Addie, our dear friends.  Darren Henderson from the Lake Poway Ward Henderson’s served as the AP when they were mission president in Canada.  She has written over 10 books and has inspired me and many more.  It was a joy to meet her.

Tonight was the Susan Easton Black Durrant lecture on the Nauvoo Temple.  We continue to learn from her wealth of knowledge.  Tonight was the British Pageant debut.  Wow, what a wonderful production.  This was also our day to shine in the finale singing, Called to Serve, Oh Say What is Truth and Redeemer of Israel. J
Here is a summary of the 2 Pageants:
The Nauvoo and British pageants celebrate the legacy of the early members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Narrated by Parley P. Pratt, the pageant emphasizes the prophetic mission of Joseph Smith and honors the sacrifice, faith and courage of the Saints who gave their all to build a city and a temple to their God.
The British pageant explores events surrounding the beginning of the Church in the British Isles and the impact of the British member's abiding faith and deep love for one another and the Savior.
The pageants are filled with authentic hymns and folksongs, lively dances, and tender moments that share the joy these early Church members found in living Christ's gospel. Through words taken from journals, sermons, and historic records of the period, the pageants invite all to feel the powerful testimonies of these faithful Christians.

Here is a link to the British Pageant:  http://www.mormon.org/british-pageant

"It's a true story. It's a good story and a story that's still being written, which might be why you're here," said Ashton, the fictional character who narrates the British Pageant. "Let me tell you why I'm here -- because in 1837 my daughter Sarah came home on fire talking some nonsense about some prophet in America. Then again, if you do some real searching, you'll discover that what you once thought was nonsense is really the truth, and in the end, the truth can change you."

Thursday—July 10—today was another lecture by Sister Durrant on the establishment of the Relief Society.  We learned that the 2 main counsels that the Prophet Joseph gave the RS sister's more than once was (1) bridle your tongues and (2) provoke your husbands to righteousness.  On our PM shift there is a local ordinance worker, Janet Buss, who I was chatting with.  This is the sister-in-law of Carolyn Buss.  Carolyn Buss was on Marilyn’s mission.  So in just 2 days, we have visited with connections to Marilyn’s friends proving once again how the mission connections are so fun.

Friday—July 11 thru Monday July 14—the rest of the week concluded with our normal routine.  The flooding on the Mississippi has gone way down, we had dinner on Friday night after our temple shift at the Hotel Nauvoo Buffet—Josh the potatoes and gravy are still good.  On Saturday night there was another thunder and lightning storm and we heard that our fellow missionary, Mary Anderson, who drives with us to Rock Island fell and fractured her knee cap.  She is the second sister missionary in the last month who has fallen and injured a knee cap.  Sister Vasas had to have surgery, Mary’s was still attached so there was no need for surgery.  We heard from all of our family and so appreciate hearing what they are up to and hearing their voices.  How grateful we are that we know that through Heavenly Father’s Plan--

Missionary Message
As missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints we have been called and set apart with authority to preach the principles of the gospel.  If you are a serious reader of this blog you will see that we have tried to do that in some form or another.  This week has been no different than any other week with inspiring messages received here on our mission in Nauvoo.  We invite you to consider the messages that are within in this blog past and present and the messages they convey.  We testify that if they are considered with a sincere heart that your faith will be strengthened and heart lightened with the message of the gospel of Jesus Christ.  We know that “TRUTH WILL PREVAIL” through the gospel of Jesus Christ and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the church that God has given His authority to in these Latter-days.  It is our prayer and deepest desire that we may all seek the truth the gospel can bring into each of our hearts and minds.
1.
President Nelson shared the following in one of our preparation meetings this week:
“Latter-day Saints need to remember that we who live now are being called upon to work out our salvation in a special time of intense and immense challenges-the last portion of the dispensation of the fulness of times during which great tribulation and temptation will occur, the elect will almost be deceived, and unrighteous people will be living much as they were in the days of Noah.… Therefore, though we have rightly applauded our ancestors for their spiritual achievements (and do not and must not discount them now), those of us who prevail today will have done no small thing. The special spirits who have been reserved to live in this time of challenges and who overcome will one day be praised for their stamina by those who pulled handcarts. -- Neal A. Maxwell (Notwithstanding My Weakness, pp. 18-19.)

2.
Sister Nelson also reminded us of a landmark talk by Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin entitled “Finding A Safe Harbor” given in October 2000 General Conference in a thought she gave this week.  She said her Safe Harbor is always within the walls of the temple.  Here is the link to the talk and some of the key points to consider:

https://www.lds.org/general-conference/2000/04/finding-a-safe-harbor?lang=eng

“In our own storms in life the Savior is our solace and our sanctuary. If we seek peace, we must come unto Him.

“Be assured that there is a safe harbor. You can find peace amidst the storms that threaten you.  Your Heavenly Father—who knows when even a sparrow falls... He loves you and wants the best for you. Never doubt this. While He allows all of us to make choices that may not always be for our own or even others’ well-being, and while He does not always intervene in the course of events, He has promised the faithful peace even in their trials and tribulations.

“Draw close to the Lord Jesus Christ. He bears a special love for those who suffer. He is the Son of God, an eternal king. In His mortal ministry He loved them and blessed them.

“Be of good cheer. The Man of Galilee, the Creator, the Son of the Living God will not forget nor forsake those whose hearts are drawn to Him. I testify that the Man who suffered for mankind, who committed His life to healing the sick and comforting the disconsolate, is mindful of your sufferings, doubts, and heartaches.

“Then,” the world would ask, “why does He sleep when the tempest rages all around me? Why does He not still this storm, or why would He let me suffer?”

“Your answer may be found in considering a butterfly. (Image added)

Wrapped tightly in its cocoon, the developing chrysalis must struggle with all its might to break its confinement. The butterfly might think, Why must I suffer so? Why cannot I simply, in the twinkling of an eye, become a butterfly?

“Such thoughts would be contrary to the Creator’s design. The struggle to break out of the cocoon develops the butterfly so it can fly. Without that adversity, the butterfly would never have the strength to achieve its destiny. It would never develop the strength to become something extraordinary.

“Adversity can strengthen and refine us. As with the butterfly, adversity is necessary to build character in people. Even when we are called to sail through troubled waters, we need to know the place of adversity in shaping our divine potential.

“You are stronger than you think. Your Heavenly Father, the Lord and Master of the universe, is your Creator.  Our spirits are eternal, and eternal spirits have immeasurable capacity!

“Our Father in Heaven…expects us to square our shoulders, roll up our sleeves, and overcome our challenges.

“That kind of spirit—that blend of faith and hard work—is the spirit we should emulate as we seek to reach a safe harbor in our own lives.

“President Howard W. Hunter said: “If our lives and our faith are centered on Jesus Christ and his restored gospel, nothing can ever go permanently wrong. On the other hand, if our lives are not centered on the Savior and his teachings, no other success can ever be permanently right.”

“Living the gospel means we will be better prepared to face life with serenity and peace. “Search diligently, pray always, and be believing,” the Lord admonished, “and all things shall work together for your good, if ye walk uprightly.”

“Draw close to the Lord Jesus Christ. Be of good cheer. Keep the faith. Doubt not.  President Gordon B. Hinckley, has said: “We have nothing to fear. God is at the helm … [and] He will shower down blessings upon those who walk in obedience to His commandments.”

3.
This from Sister Carole M. Stephens, first counselor in the General Relief Society Presidency, and her message from her October 2013 General Conference talks entitled—Do We Know What We Have?

“Sons of God, do you know who you are? Do you know what you have? Are you worthy to exercise the priesthood and receive the power and blessings of the priesthood? Do you embrace your roles and responsibilities to strengthen homes as fathers, grandfathers, sons, brothers, and uncles? Do you show respect for women, womanhood, and motherhood?”
“Daughters of God, do we know who we are? Do we know what we have? Are we worthy to receive the power and blessings of the priesthood? Do we receive the gifts given to us with gratitude, grace, and dignity? Do we embrace our roles and responsibilities to strengthen homes as mothers, grandmothers, daughters, sisters, and aunts? Do we show respect for men, manhood, and fatherhood?”
“As covenant sons and daughters, do we have faith in our Heavenly Father and His eternal plan for us? Do we have faith in Jesus Christ and His Atonement? Do we believe that we have a divine nature and destiny? And in our efforts to achieve this destiny and receive all that the Father has, do we understand the importance of receiving priesthood ordinances and making, keeping, and renewing our covenants with the Lord?”
“We are beloved spirit sons and daughters of heavenly parents, with a divine nature and destiny. Our Savior, Jesus Christ, loved us enough to give His life for us. His Atonement provides the way for us to progress on the path to our heavenly home, through sacred priesthood ordinances and covenants.”

CHAPTER 10 WEEK of JUNE 30 to JULY 8

Monday—June 30—AM shift.  Tonight we had a huge thunder and lightning storm.  This went on for more than 30 minutes.  It was quite spectacular.  It happened when we went to bed and the whole room lit up every time there was lightning.  We do not get those kinds of storms in California.

Tuesday—July 1—wow, already July, my how time is flying by.  After our AM shift e went to have lunch at Grandpa John’s—they have awesome French fries.  While we were on Mulholland we saw the Nauvoo Bagpipe Band performing.  This band comes every year the week before the Pageant starts to go to several of the outlying areas to play and publicize the Nauvoo Pageant.  They are all volunteers and come for a 2 week stint just like the cast from the Pageant.  So in essence, the performers change every two weeks.  There is a core cast for the Pageant but all of the rest of the supporting cast comes for just 2 weeks and then a new cast comes in as we understand it.  It was quite a special treat to just come upon the band today and we really felt the spirit of their performance and were reminded of President Hinckley’s love the bagpipes.  A picture is included in this weeks album (link included at the end of this post.)

Wednesday—July 2—After our AM shift today we had a message that Norma and Larry Crowder dear friends from Elwood, Indiana were in town and so we were able to visit and have dinner with them at the Hotel Nauvoo Buffet.  After dinner we went to the Susan Easton Black Durrant Lecture on the saints in Quincy.  Two significant conversions took place there.  The Ezra T. Benson family and the John Browning family.  President Ezra Taft Benson came from this family and John Browning is the gunsmith who gave much to help the saints.  It was great fun to see Norma and Larry.

Thursday—July 3—We went to the S. E. B. D. lecture in the morning on Baptisims for the Dead.  They were first performed in Nauvoo in the Mississippi River and most of the temple revelations came to Joseph Smith when he was conducting and speaking at the many funerals in Nauvoo.  After we were done with our shift we went to Sunset on the Mississippi.  Another thoroughly enjoyable performance.  When we got home we had a message from Wanda and Dean Jacobs telling us there were in Nauvoo and wanted to come over after they finished dinner.  So about 9:30 they showed up and we chatted for a while and then made plans to have lunch on Friday at Grandpa John’s at 11:30.  What a treat to see Wanda and how happy she is beging married to Dean.  Fun time.

Friday—July 4—7 AM Flag Raising Ceremony at the Visitor’s Center.  Nauvoo Brass Band and a brief patriotic message started off our 4th of July celebration which really brought the spirit of this great day of celebration in America.

One of the quotes that was mentioned came from Harold B. Lee on this great nation of America:

"Men may fail in this country, earthquakes may come, seas may heave beyond their bounds, there may be great drought, disaster, and hardship, but this nation, founded on principles laid down by men whom God raised up, will never fail. This is the cradle of humanity, where life on this earth began in the Garden of Eden. This is the place of the new Jerusalem. This is the place that the Lord said is favored above all other nations in all the world. This is the place where the Savior will come to His temple. This is the favored land in all the world. Yes, I repeat, men may fail, but this nation won't fail. I have faith in America ; you and I must have faith in America , if we understand the teachings of the gospel of Jesus Christ. We are living in a day when we must pay heed to these challenges.
I plead with you not to preach pessimism. Preach that this is the greatest country in all the world. This is the favored land. This is the land of our forefathers. It is the nation that will stand despite whatever trials or crises it may yet have to pass through." -- Harold B. Lee  (Ye Are the Light of the World, 350-51)

There were no fireworks in Nauvoo but there were in Keokuk but we did not go.  The Nauvoo fireworks were scheduled for Saturday evening at 9:30 PM.  The LucasFam 4th of July celebrations have changed in the last few years from our usual Balboa Island celebrations at the Algeo’s but everyone celebrated in one way or another.  John’s family had a firework bonanza in front of his house with a bush catching on fire across the street.  Josh and Justin’s family spent the 4th in Oregon together.  Jared’s family spent the 4th in Idaho and were even in the Star, Idaho parade.  Jeff spent the 4th in Yosemite and Marilyn did go to the Algeo’s on the 3rd to celebrate our usual tradition with them.

Saturday—July 5—on our walk this morning we saw the Mississippi Flooding in Nauvoo at the end of Parley Street.  We had heard that the Mississippi had been starting to flood this week in Burlington and Fort Madison and evidently it came down farther to Nauvoo.  It is reported that this is the first time since 2008 that there has been this much flooding.  A picture in the newspaper showed how bad it was in Burlington.  This is a town just about 50 miles north of Nauvoo across the bridge on the Iowa side of the Mississippi.  The picture below was from a local newspaper.

Sunday—July 6—we went to church today in the Nauvoo 1st Ward because we were having the Break the Fast Event at the Curtis home.  There were over 1500 people at this ward today and so we sat in the YW Room and listened to Sacrament Meeting.  It was quite an amazing sight to have that many at a Sacrament meeting.  In Relief Society we had a lesson on Daughter’s of the Covenant by President Eyring.  Even though this was directed to the sisters, the message of being a covenant people was loud and clear.  Covenant keeping has been discussed by Sister Linda K. Burton at the September 2013 General Relief Society Meeting in her talk entitled, “The Power, Joy and Love of Covenant Keeping” and then again this past April at the first ever General Women’s Meeting where the audience was girls ages 8 and up attending with the young women and women of the  Church—a landmark broadcast.  Sister Rosemary Wixom reinforced this topic once again along with President Eyring in her talk entitled, “Keeping Covenants PROTECTS US, PREPARES US AND EMPOWERS US.”   We believe there is an important message from Heavenly Father to us regarding this sacred topic of covenant keeping and so we share just a few of the key points from these talks:

President Eyring told members of the worldwide congregation that they were tutored by their Heavenly Father before they came into this life. “He helped you understand and accept that you would have trials, tests, and opportunities perfectly chosen just for you. You learned that our Father had a plan of happiness to get you safely through those trials and that you would help bring others safely through theirs. This plan is marked by covenants with God.”
It is a free choice to make and keep covenants, he explained. “Only a few of His daughters [sons] have the opportunity in this life to even learn of those covenants. You are one of the favored few. You, dear sisters [brothers], each of you, is a daughter [son] in the covenant.”
To add impact to the above statement regarding “only a few…” the following was added by the RS teacher which should put it in perspective:
According to the official 2008 year end statistics for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, there are 13,508,509 members of the Church worldwide. The estimated world population is 6,706,993,152.  This means that Latter Day Saints make up barely over 0.2% of the world's population. (The exact number is 0.20141%)
Elder Eyring emphasized “that the path back to live again with Heavenly Father is marked by sacred covenants with God.”
Sister Linda K. Burton taught the following:

“. . .we demonstrate our love for our Father in Heaven and for our Savior,” she said by “making and keeping our covenants which is an expression of our commitment to become like the Savior.”
She gave three reasons to make and keep covenants:
1. Covenant keeping strengthens, empowers, and protects.
2. Keeping covenants is essential for true happiness.
3. Keeping our covenants demonstrates our love for the Savior and our Father in Heaven.

Covenant keeping, she said, is one way for Latter-day Saints to express their love for the incomprehensible, infinite Atonement of their Savior and Redeemer and the perfect love of their Father in Heaven.
We had a lovely Break the Fast event at the Curtis home with the Gorrell’s and the Henderson’s.  Sister Curtis made some very yummy French Dip sandwiches.  If anyone is interested in the recipe Sister Curtis shared it with me so let me know.

The Nauvoo Fireworks show was quite the hit lasting over 30 minutes.  We just had to walk down to the corner and had a great view.

Monday—July 7—Today we received an urgent request from President McArthur to be in the finale of the British Pageant with a practice at 8:00.  We went to that and sure enough we are in the British Pageant.  We are amused by this request to say the least.  We are singing with the other temple and site missionaries Called to Serve, a part of Oh Say What is Truth and Redeemer of Israel.  We stayed for the dress rehearsal and was deeply impressed with the British Pageant.  Everything was going fine with the dress rehearsal until the thunder and lightning storm hit full force and all of a sudden there was a down pour and the voice on the microphone said everyone is now released to go home.  So we didn’t see the end or practice our part once again but with God all things are possible so the show will go on and be wonderful.  We had walked over and got completely drenched going home.  Another mission experience to remember for sure!
Tuesday—July 8—P-Day.  We got up early today and went and save seats for the Nauvoo Pagenat debut tonight--this is the protocol we have learned. We had seen Sister Brockbank, our Nauvoo angel, at the pageant practice last night and she told us she was going to be at the Sarah Granger Kimball home today.  So we were able to do that today.  The story about the Pageant will be posted in next week's blog.

Special note to Chase and Lance:  It was so awesome talking with you on Skype today!!!  Love that we can do the multiple window Skyping so we can see each of your faces!!  Thanks Josh for setting that up.  It is so fun!!

July 1 Nauvoo Moment from Chuck:
Nauvoo Moment (The Abundant Life)
The temple is the most sacred place on earth. It is a holy place dedicated to the highest forms of worship. It is a spiritual environment set apart from the outside world. The Temple is a spiritual haven where we can feel a special closeness to the Lord.
We visit the temple to find the peaceful serenity the Savior promised His followers in the New Testament. “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you.”   (John 14:27)
That is what I feel here in Nauvoo.  It is His peace, and it puts the cares of the world in their proper place. As we go to the temple as frequently as our lives permit, we are blessed with a peace that endures. (This peace can be found as we worship & serve in our own temple wherever that may be. We can also obtain this peace by visiting the temple grounds while we work on obtaining a temple recommend.)
Temple work in behalf of those who have died is performed as an act of love. It is unselfish & motivated only by the desire to bring God’s most treasured blessings to all of His children.
In the temple we receive answers to life’s profound questions. Who am I? Where did I come from? Why am I here on earth? What happens to me when life ends?
We learn of our premortal life with a loving Heavenly Father & of His plan of happiness for us during our mortal existence. We are taught about our divine heritage and we are given the opportunity to express our commitment to live according to the principles of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
We are instructed about our earthly beginnings & how those events relate to our eternal happiness. We learn about the relationship God had with Adam & Eve, our first earthly parents, in the Garden of Eden.
We witness God’s infinite love for all His children in providing a Savior – His own Son, Jesus Christ. We gain a greater understanding of and appreciation for Christ’s Atonement, which provides the power to rescue all of us from physical & spiritual death.
We came to earth to be tested & the promises we make in the temple become anchors of stability in our daily living.
Progressing & understanding who we are is a step-by-step process. It is the work of a lifetime.
The grace of Jesus Christ is extended to everyone, & eternal life in our heavenly home will be granted to all who accept that grace through their faithful obedience.
We are all God’s children & we have equal standing before Him. Contentment, inner harmony, resilience, & peace are attainable for all of us because of the atonement of Christ.
The Lord’s invitation is offered to all: “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10)
Our family is living the abundant life. Our blessings outnumber the trials we experience. Working together in Christ we have been promised we cannot fail. Our eternal destiny, even now, with all that has happened is secure in our Savior’s love & grace as we come unto Him. I know God lives and that He loves us. I know when we stop doubting & believe – Miracles Happen! (It is not too late, in fact, this is the best day yet to begin) I love you and I pray for your welfare as I know you pray for mine. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
